lyrics

Desktop Shanty

I’m a not very civil servant and my life it is so dull,
I just stare out of the window, getting bored out of my skull,
My mood forever grumpy till the time I draw me pay…
From the daily grind I let my mind a wander far away,

Sometimes I do imagine it’s once more unto the breach,
As I labour on robotic, this week’s targets for to reach,
Yet there is one day of the week, adrenalin will flow...
Cos it’s my delight on a Thursday night to me folk club for to go…

Like a tightly coiled spring all day long I’ll watch the clock,
And at five o’ clock like a sprinter I’ll be fast out of the blocks,
Like a seventeen stone greyhound home to swallow down me grub...
To make sure I’m there early o to get me place in the pub..

And I’ll sing sea shanties, make a loud lusty din,
Like a great almighty foghorn, with a huge supply of wind in me sails
Haul away, mi lads, heave ho mi boys
It’s oh so fancy free
Tell the world and his wife it’s a sailor’s life
When I’m sailing upon the sea.

My line manager looks at me and thinks me to be weird,
All with me tied back pony tail, and a bird’s nest in my beard,
I wear a suit but ill it fits and how I long to be...
In me scruffy woolly pully sailing upon the sea.

I wear the hair upon my chin that should be on my head,
I’m mister upside down man ,I’ve overheard it said,
Sometimes when sitting at my desk, I’ll drift into a snooze,
I’ll dream I’m in the Sailor’s Arms knocking back the booze,

And I’ll sing sea shanties make a loud lusty din…

My teacup is a compass, my pen a mast so trim,
My computer is the captain’s log
(Oh, by the way I can’t swim)
I’m living in a virtual world that beats reality
Sat here in me office in Milton Keynes, I’m sailing upon the sea.

So I’ll bellow and I’ll shout and I’ll holler and I’ll roar,
Lets sing a rousing chorus and then sing a loud encore,
Eat your heart out Led Zeppelin, we don’t do subtlety
Let’s all go down in a wall of sound sailing upon the sea..

And I’ll sing sea shanties make a loud lusty din

So voices raise let’s sing the praise of those good old shanty men,
Splice the mainbrace, heave her to then haul her back again,
I’ll stand there with me trousers defying gravity,
And I’ll shed no tears for that ringing in your ears
When I’m sailing upon the sea.
.

And I’ll sing sea shanties, make a loud lusty din
